Investigating the Feelings of Texas Tech University Stakeholders About the Black Lives Matter Movement

Abstract

We conducted a survey among Texas Tech university stakeholders to investigate their feelings about the Black Lives Matter movement. Our respondents included undergraduates, graduates, and staff. Our study was guided by a predetermined set of hypotheses that helped us draft the survey questions.

We examined the feelings of stakeholders about several aspects that included the nature of protest by Collin Kaepernick, whether the police were fair to blacks or not, whether racism was a problem or not, etc. Interesting findings showed that most of the respondents were not in support with the nature of the protest by Collin Kaepernick, though they supported the movement. We successfully attained our goal of investing such various aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement as will be seen in the next sections of this write-up. (Judas Tadeo)

Analysis of Texas Tech Students’ Perception About Black Lives Matter

Abstract

This research paper discusses BlackLivesMatter (BLM), which is a national organization that seeks to reintegrate and rehabilitate the lost rights of African-Americans in the United States society. BLM as well aims to stop racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system. Due to the controversy that exists between BLM chapters and the Government of the United States, the academic writing course (ESL 5315) in Texas Tech University (TTU), created a survey to investigate how TTU students feel about BLM and issues related to it like the Collin Kaepernick national anthem protest. The survey’s purpose was not to carry out a social statistical analysis study; it only gave us the opportunity to learn something about the data and achieve this report based on the formats and writing rules discussed in class. From the data collected 83.8% of the students agree that blacks are marginalized and killed at the hands of the police by accident. On the contrary, about 20% of the students agree that the deaths of black people at the hands of the police have been by accident. This result confirms why black communities are so worried for their safety. Therefore, the BLM movement has left us clear that living in a democracy is not always perfect and the murders of black men and women in the United States are real, and it is a social issue that should be attended to in a more objective way. Knowing the Perspective of the Texas Tech Community about Black Lives Matter

Abstract

Black Lives Matter is a new Afro American movement. Like the previous Black movements, they are fighting for equal rights for the Afro Americans. Recently they are doing a lot of protests against the recent police killing incidents toward Afro Americans. Unfortunately, some of them turned violent. The media are giving a lot of coverage to those negative movement incidents, and Americans have different opinions of this movement. Hence, the ESL 5315 class conducted a survey to find what the Texas Tech community’s perception of this movement was. Our data consisted of 293 surveys answered by student or faculty members of Texas Tech University. We found that people from 18-22 years old, and people older than 29 years felt bothered by the movement. Most of the respondents in both categories are also against Kaepernick’s anthem protest. However, almost a quarter of the respondents felt that he has the right to do it. As we expected, most of the respondents did not know what the real purposes of the movement were. Additionally, the majority of the respondents felt that the movement was over exaggerating the police killing incidents, even though, most of the respondents think that not all the incidents were accidental. We conclude that in general most of the respondents were not in favor of the movement. The small sample in this paper, and the unbalanced data between age groups are some of the factors that would not allow us to generalize these results to the whole Texas Tech community. A further survey with a bigger sample, and more questions is needed to be conducted to find if this result are representative of the whole Texas Tech community. (Edgar Aviles-Rosa)

General Opinions of Texas Tech University Community on Black Lives Matter movement

Abstract

Since the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has attracted considerable public attention, many research institutions and websites have conducted some surveys among Americans to find out how American people view Black Lives Matter movements. In a similar attempt, we conducted a survey on the Texas Tech University (TTU) main campus to get general opinions of TTU community on the same issue. This report helped us get to know how TTU people treat the BLM movement. The key findings were that most of people in the TTU community were not very aware of the motives of BLM movement. Also, most of the respondents thought police stereotyped African-Americans as having a tendency to commit crime more than other races. (Lingjuan Qi)

Survey of the people affiliated with Texas Tech University on the perception of issues relating to the Black Lives Matter movement

Abstract

Herein, we discuss the perception of the people affiliated with Texas Tech University on the issues relating to Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. The survey was based on a questionnaire and included approximately three hundred participants and was conducted within the campus. The results of the survey suggested that the support for BLM movement is not very prominent among the respondents. Though majority of the participants approved the motives of the BLM movement, half of them perceive that the movement is not headed in the right direction and that the protests for the cause of BLM movement are becoming violent in recent times. Also, a fraction of the respondents hold a negative perception of the BLM movement and believe that the movement is overly exaggerated. Majority of this group of respondents also believed that racism is not an issue in the country and that the BLM movement is not necessary. (Ashwin)

Black Lives Matter

Abstract

This study analyzes the perceptions of Texas Tech Community about the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, which is popular nation-wide in the United States. The movement’s goal is to arrest the atrocious killings of Black Men by the police force in the United States. This movement is very popular among most of the households of Black communities, yet how far has this movement reached the households of other communities is not exactly known. In view of studying how far people are aware of BLM and to study their perceptions on different dimensions of this movement, and how BLM has affected common people, the graduate students of ESL 5301 conducted a survey. The survey results clearly indicated that respondents believed that racism still exists in the United States. Respondents, both men and women were equally aware of the BLM and expressed that BLM does not cause disturbance to their peace and daily life. The respondents also felt that police are stereo typing black people with more crime than any other race, and that the police killings of the black people were not merely accidental.
